The Path to Becoming a SEAS skipper

People join SEAS with all kinds of prior experience, ranging from "never been on a boat before" through already having a US Coast Guard license. We will take into account this prior experience when determining at what level a member should "slot-in" to the process. Everybody is not required to work up through the levels; experienced sailors might come in at level II or even level III (see the Skipper Certification process for definitions of levels and their requirements).

For the less experienced, SEAS offers the following:

  • Basic Sailing Classes
  • Informal sails every Thursday evening on the daysailers, providing an opportunity to improve those basic sailing skills (no preregistration necessary; see Sailing Calendar for contact information.).
  • Activity sails several days each week on the two keelboats (the 28' O'Day and the 22' Rhodes). These are listed on the Sailing Calendar on the website; skippers volunteer to run these on specific dates and you must preregister with the skipper - contact information is on the calendar.
  • The mentoring program runs every Monday evening, alternating between the 28' O'Day and the 22' Rhodes. In this program experienced skippers offer members the opportunity to learn specific skills such as maneuvering under power, heavy weather sailing, crew management, and other skills as requested by the mentee. You must register for this program by fillng out and sending an application form. Specific dates for each boat are listed on the Courses and Training Calendar.
  • Advanced Sailing classes, Boat Handling classes and various "Mini-Courses" are offered during the season - these are listed on the Courses and Training Calendar.

The Application Process

If you desire to become a SEAS skipper and think you qualify at a certain level after reading the requirements, send your request and any necessary documentation to the SCC coordinator, currently Graham Blundell (graham.blundell@gmail.com). Graham will forward your application to all the committee members and will also send you an acknowledgement, which will include an anticipated timeline for a decision to be made (generally a couple of weeks or less). When the committee has made a decision, Graham will let you know what it is, including any additional requirements the committee may have, such as the need to schedule a sail with one of the SCC members.
