Society for the Education of American Sailors - We're All About Sailing

Monthly Meetings

  • General Membership Meeting
  • The general membership meetings held at Keyport Yacht Club (where we are a guest) are open to members, prospective members and guests. They are held January through November on the last Tuesday of each month from 7:30 pm to approximately 9:30 pm. The format is generally an introduction of key personnel, updates from the organization, a safety nugget, then the featured speaker will present a 45 minute presentation. The topics range from sailing to water related topics. Many members meet for dinner in town before the meeting. The meetings are a great way to socialize with like minded individuals and build a network of sailing friends as well as learn more about our organization.

  • Executive Board Meeting
  • The Executive Board meetings are held via Zoom the second Monday of each month January through November (except October which is the 3rd Monday) from 7 pm to 9 pm. This is a business meeting where committee reports are provided to the leadership team. The Executive Board oversees the finances and policies of the organization. The Executive Board is comprised of volunteer elected officials. Committee chairpersons do not need to be a member of the Ex. Board, but report to the board. All members are welcome to attend the Executive Board meetings.

Yearly Events

Members of SEAS Monmouth are part of the National SEAS organization which has a total of four chapters: Bergen, Monmouth, Morris and Westchester. As a member you are invited to participate in two yearly events that are hosted by a rotation of each of the four chapters.

  • National Annual Membership Meeting
  • This is held in the winter between February or March. The day's event includes continental breakfast and lunch. The presentations include each chapters Distinguished Service Award for the prior year, a National Distinguished Service Award, highlights from each chapter, committee reports including Education, Finance, and any constitution or by-law changes. The afternoon includes a speaker presentation and elections of national offices for the current year. It is a great opportunity to meet members from the other areas and network.

  • Sailfest
  • This is held usually in September at a water site where the host chapter invites the other chapter members to come out and sail with them on their fleet. The day's event includes lunch, sailing on board boats to sloops and lots of fun!

Social Events

At SEAS Monmouth we enjoy having social events throughout the year, some providing sailing opportunities and some purely social. Our parties often have a theme and can include a "pot luck" dinner. Some past include Music Trivia, Halloween and Karaoke along with holiday themed parties. Volunteers can submit an idea for a party and offer to host an event. There are resources available to help launch a successful event. All of our social activities can be found on our Meetings and Social Events Calendar, and are open to all members and guests.

Our Small Boat Days, all-day affairs held twice a month on Saturdays or Sundays during the sailing season, started out as sailing sessions to give our Basic Sailing graduates more practice time on the day-sailers and Lasers, but before long became another opportunity for members to socialize, and maybe get a little small-boat sailing in at the same time. Small Boat Days can be found on our All-Sailing Calendar, and are also open to all members and guests.

Networking

We have a private facebook group called SEAS Monmouth.

Besides the informal networking opportunities within the SEAS Monmouth organization, where our members have a range of backgrounds and sailing experience, many of our members belong to other activities-oriented organizations, including the Princeton Ski Club, Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club, and the Jersey Shore Sea Kayak Association. In addition, we advertise our sailing activities on the Meet-up website. This gives our club a rich mixture of activity-oriented people from across the region.
